Thalavoor is a Grama Panchayat situated in the Pathanapuram Block of Kollam district. The Kallada River, which flows westward from the eastern part of Kollam district and empties into the Ashtamudi Lake, flows along the northeastern side of the Panchayat. Approximately nine and a half kilometers of the Kallada River pass through the Panchayat area. Based on its geographical features, the Panchayat is categorized as a midland region. Thalavoor Grama Panchayat is bordered by Pathanapuram Panchayat to the north, Vilakkudy Panchayat to the east, Melila Panchayat to the south, Mylom Panchayat to the west, and Pattazhy Panchayat to the northwest.According to local elders, this region was once known as “Thalaivar Vazhum Oor,” meaning “the land where leaders lived.” “Thalaivar” means leader, and “Oor” means land or village. Thalavoor is a land rich in ancient heritage and socio-cultural significance. It is believed that the name “Thalavoor” originated from the phrase “Thalaivar Vazhum Oor,” meaning “the land where leaders lived.” This region, which was once part of the former princely state of Travancore, served as a center of landlords and local chieftains. The famous Thalavoor Pooram festival, ancient temples, churches, and traditional stone platforms known as “Kalathattus” stand as symbols of its rich past.
