Thalavoor is a Grama Panchayat situated in the Pathanapuram Block of Kollam district. The Kallada River, which flows westward from the eastern part of Kollam district and empties into the Ashtamudi Lake, flows along the northeastern side of the Panchayat. Approximately nine and a half kilometers of the Kallada River pass through the Panchayat area. Based on its geographical features, the Panchayat is categorized as a midland region. Thalavoor Grama Panchayat is bordered by Pathanapuram Panchayat to the north, Vilakkudy Panchayat to the east, Melila Panchayat to the south, Mylom Panchayat to the west, and Pattazhy Panchayat to the northwest.

According to local elders, this region was once known as “Thalaivar Vazhum Oor,” meaning “the land where leaders lived.” “Thalaivar” means leader, and “Oor” means land or village. It is believed that respected and capable individuals who played important roles in resolving local issues once lived here. The famous and ancient Thalavoor Pooram festival is celebrated at the Thrikkonnamarkodu Devi Temple, located at the heart of the Panchayat.

Before the formation of Thalavoor Panchayat in 1952, the region was administered through village unions selected by the Tahsildar. Cherukode Kuttan Pillai was the last president of the Village Union. The first president of the Panchayat Committee was E.K. Kesava Pillai. The first Panchayat Committee consisted of eight members, including two nominated members. Thalavoor Panchayat comprises the villages of Thalavoor and Pidavoor.
